DescriptionCarrots and sticks for the mathematics classroom will be described, with an emphasis on a tool for web-assisted education as well as various implementations. The tool, at http://tutor-web.net, currently includes an item allocation algorithms, various grading schemes with penalties and the Smileycoin, a cryptocurrency for rewards. It is mainly used with in-class education. Results will be presented on the effects of using such a tool, implementations in Iceland and Kenya, from primary school through graduate school, along with directions for future work. The development of the tool is a research project whose mission  (http://bit.ly/tedx-gunnar) is to enhance mathematics education, particularly for two groups: those who do not have access to high-quality education and those who do not want to learn mathematics. Low-income regions pose several challenges including lack of funds, lack of Internet and poor access to electricity.
