DescriptionSubmarine fiber optic cables in the arctic region represent big opportunities in various fields. In a global connectivity perspective transpolar submarine cables may offer groundbreaking low round-trip times between Europe and Asia, potentially jeopardizing global traffic patterns. In addition, fiber optic cable infrastructure may also offer sensing of various physical parameters, offering big and completely new research and monitoring opportunities. However, crossing thick ice with cable ships, moving icebergs and heavy weather conditions etc. is challenging. Are we facing a moon landing for the submarine cable industry and the NRENs?
