The GEANT Testbeds Service is a new service introduce by GEANT in GN3+. GTS provides virtualized network environments for network research (broadly construed.) GTS provides a formal virtualization architecture and allows users to specify and acquire cyber-infrastructure resources and their placement across the GEANT footprint. Each virtual testbed is insulated and isolated from other GTS testbeds and is fully under control of the user. External access from the user testbed to other locations can be set up as well. GTS is now deployed and operation. As of the NTW2015 it has approximately 30 servers and 200+ VMs in seven European locations. It offers virtual circuits (NSI based) up to 10Gbps connectivity among user virtual resources, and provides both hardware and software based openflow switching resources. And many features are in the wings being developed and deployed over the coming months. The first GTS TechFutures Workshop will be held at NORDUnet Kastrup on October 20-22 to bring together GTS users, network operators, and the development team to plan the GTS Futures Roadmap. The first day will provide new user training. Other days will include a User Projects symposium/experineces session and a Futures Roadmap session to discuss and gather future features/requirements the community would like to see. The GTS facility is open for business and is [presently] free to the GEANT community. Initial target user groups are FIRE and/or GENI projects, distributed applications developers, and/or other relevant cyber-infrastructure research or development efforts. New technologies, services and unavoidable staff turnover require constant efforts aiming and transfer and upgrade of competencies to NREN personnel. Each NREN sooner or later faces similar technological and organisational problems, yet NRENs' approach varies, from invention through re-invention to re-use. GEANT Campus Best Practices activity collects the information on NRENs existing developments in the form of "Best Practices Documents" and shares them through "Best Practices Workshops". The workshops are organized by NRENs and for NRENs and are localized to individual regions of Europe, in order to tackle the most typical problems. But there exists yet another factor, which refers to the need to address the future needs of NRENs. This marks a shift to more proactive approach, where NRENs may benefit from dedicated "task forces" proposing solutions to anticipated problems and training NRENs personnel. The new concept is called "Best Practices Academy" - here we are looking for comunity experts, tutors, trainers, technology investigators and visionnaires in order to create modern trainings portfolio available to our NRENs. Campus Best Practices is virtually the only GEANT activity providing commonly available training events to GEANT community and only by joining efforts and expertise we are able to provide quality content for our workshops. ***

As part of a pilot project UNINETT has deployed several low cost WiFi monitoring probes in campus networks. The probes are based on Raspberry Pi and when deployed they measure the quality of the WiFi network by connecting to eduroam. A total of 42 metrics are collected including observed SSIDs, link quality, connection time, throughput etc. This talk will give a quick overview of the probes and discuss some of the results from the pilot.

Working together on lecture capture - In 2012 UNINETT opened their Mediasite service to higher education in Norway. There has been a tremendous growth since then, now counting 25 universities using the service. This talk will discuss how this have been achieved.

As a part of the eCampus program, UNINETT is running a project on digital assessment. The work is to coordinate or facilitate a national solution for digital assessment. As part of this work, we are writing best practice documents. The talk gives a short introduction to this best practice documents.

This is a followup talk to the introduction of the best practice documents, and gives an overview of the content in one of the BP documents. The content of this BP documents can be transferred for any other centrally provided service.

We gather the optical signal strengths from all of our optical links, this is done with a python program that collects the data from every Juniper and every type of Cisco device we have in or core network. I can give a brief explanation on how I collect the data, and how the data gives us an advantage in detecting potential faults before they happen.

A new direct sea cable between Finland and Germany and the R&E use…

UNINETT has for many years operated a large scale passive and active monitoring infrastructure. The infrastructure consists of probes that are installed using optical splitters to monitor all traffic going in and out of campus networks. A new service that will use Suricata for intrusion detection will soon be released for this infrastructure. The main focus will be outgoing traffic to detect infected machines on campus. UNINETT has secured cooperation with Mnemonic, a big security consultant company in Norway, and the Norwegian National Security Authority to provide rulesets for the system. This talk will give a quick overview of the intrusion detection system.
