Connecting Radio Telescopes for Global VLBI

TrackTrack 2 (Auditorium 2)
DescriptionVery Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is a technique in which the signals received by remote radio telescopes are combined to make high resolution images of astronomical objects. With support of the EC, the European VLBI Network is a world-leader in innovating this data-intensive technique by making the telescopes connected in real-time and supporting various new observational modes. In my talk I will describe the considerations and the progress we have made in data transport, data curation, computation, archiving and user interfaces for e-VLBI. I will discuss how VLBI will become more and more a global facility and how the current technical developments are feeding into the definition of new radio astronomy facilities.
